Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncturists use very thin, filiform stainless steel needles that are inserted into specific points, called acupuncture points on the body.  Most clients agree that the insertion of the needle is quick and painless. Some clients are even unaware of where the needles have been placed! Once the needles are in, sensations in the area can include heaviness, throbbing, weighted, tingling, vibrating, aching, or floating.  The client will often feel incredibly relaxed and drift off into a light sleep or a dream like state.

Is there a risk for HIV/AIDS, infections, or hepatitis?

Acupuncturists use sterile, single use needles that are individually packaged.  After the needles are used, they are disposed of a biohazard sharps container for incineration, like other medical waste.  I do not sterilize any equipment myself, and all my needles are disposable.

Are there any side effects to acupuncture?

Usually not, as energy is redirected in the body, the biochemistry of the body shifts radically.  Hormones and immune mediators are stimulated to produce feelings of relaxation or euphoria and begin the healing process.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments needed will differ from person to person.  A sixty year old man will not recover from a fall as easily as a 30 year old man, the older person will need longer care.  A healthy sixty year old man will heal faster than a sixty year old man with non insulin dependant Type II diabetes and elevated cholesterol levels taking several medications.  However, both men have an equal opportunity to recover and be “healthier” on a cellular level than prior to care.
